The Doctoral Journey as an Emotional, Embodied, Political Experience - Stories from the Field (Paperback): Gayle Letherby,... The Doctoral Journey as an Emotional, Embodied, Political Experience - Stories from the Field (Paperback)
Gayle Letherby, Rebecca Twinley
R1,056 Discovery Miles 10 560 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The Doctoral Journey as an Emotional, Embodied, Political Experience is the first text of its kind to capture stories of involvement in doctoral journeys from students, supervisors, and examiners. Drawing from experiences across a variety of disciplines in the social sciences, medical sciences, education and the humanities, these stories share a keenness to demonstrate the ways in which this journey is emotional (rather than detached), embodied (rather than separated), and political (rather than having no relationship to politics). The journey metaphor is often adopted to describe and explore the PhD process. However, this journey is usually only seen from the perspective of the doctoral candidate. This implies that it is only the student that learns, develops, and reflects. This is clearly not always (maybe never) the case. The suggestion that the candidate 'learns' whilst the supervisors 'teach' harks back to traditional masculinist educational approaches and neglects the reciprocal knowledge-sharing process between student and supervisor. Similarly, the prescription that relationships between all concerned remain 'professional' and removed, rather than in any way intimate, suggest an unrealistic acceptance of an scientific, detached objective agenda rather than an emotional, embodied, political, and holistic approach to research. The contributions to this book extend the journey metaphor to additionally consider the experiences of supervisors and examiners, including the joint, collaborative journey of the 'team' (the candidate, their supervisors, and their examiners). This provides a challenge to traditional understandings of the doctoral process and offers implications for future reflection and practice. This book is therefore an invaluable resource for doctoral students, supervisors, examiners, and readers interested in pedagogy and educational practice.

Sex as Crime? (Paperback): Gayle Letherby, Kate Williams, Philip Birch, Maureen E Cain Sex as Crime? (Paperback)
Gayle Letherby, Kate Williams, Philip Birch, Maureen E Cain
R1,319 Discovery Miles 13 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book brings together chapters by academics, researchers and practitioners to analyse how crimes such as sex work, domestic violence and rape and sexual assault have risen up the Government agenda in recent years. For example, the 'Paying the Price' consultation exercise on sex work in 2004, and recent legislation around sex crimes, including the Sex Offences Act (2003). This is a multi-disciplinary, social scientific, pro-feminist collection, which draws upon practice, empirical research, documentary analysis and overviews of research in the areas of sex work and sexual violence. Within Sex as Crime there are two distinct sub-sections: 'Sex for Sale' and 'Sex as Violence', but the broader and overriding link of sex as crime remains a paramount theme that spans the collection. Chapters include discussions of the impact of new regulations on street sex workers, and of street sex work on community residents, the use of the internet by men who pay for sex and men who sell it, sexual violence and identity, sex crimes against children and protecting children online and working with sex offenders. Other chapters explore reasons for such offending behaviour.

Train Tracks - Work, Play and Politics on the Railways (Hardcover, New): Gayle Letherby, Gillian Reynolds Train Tracks - Work, Play and Politics on the Railways (Hardcover, New)
Gayle Letherby, Gillian Reynolds
R4,003 Discovery Miles 40 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides an in-depth exploration of trains and train travel. Letherby and Reynolds have conducted extensive research with all those concerned with trains, from leisure travelers and enthusiasts to railway workers and commuters. Overturning conventional wisdom, they show that the train has a social life in and of itself and is not simply a way to get from A to B. The book also looks at the depiction of train travel through cultural media, such as music, films, books and art. Letherby and Reynolds consider the personal politics of train travel and political discussion surrounding the railways, as well as the relationship trains have to leisure and work. The media often paints a gloomy picture of the railways and there is a general view that that the romance of train travel ended with the steam locomotive. This book shows that this is far from the case.

The book debates: - the philosophical bases of objectivity and relativity - relationism and dynamic synthesis - situated objectivity - theorised subjectivity - social objects and realism - objectivity and subjectivity in practice The authors explain complex arguments with great clarity for social science students, while also providing the detail and comprehensiveness required to meet the needs of practising researchers and scholars.

Feminist Research in Theory and Practice (Paperback, Ed): Gayle Letherby Feminist Research in Theory and Practice (Paperback, Ed)
Gayle Letherby
R892 Discovery Miles 8 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

.".".an extremely welcome addition to the field of feminist research."
British Journal of Educational Studies"

This is a clear and accessible exploration of feminist method, methodology and epistemology. After situating herself and her work, Gayle Letherby charts the debates concerned with the epistemological, political and practical issues involved in doing feminist research, and places the debates within a wider consideration of the status of knowledge. The main focus of the book is then the particular and practical issues for feminist researchers. It examines how the process of research affects the results of that research and explores the relation between politics and practice in terms of research and knowledge production. Throughout the book there is a practical emphasis on specific examples of feminist research in action and, as well as summarizing current theoretical debates, Gayle Letherby adds to them.

"Feminist Research in Theory and Practice" is designed and written as a textbook for students (at advanced undergraduate and postgraduate level) but will be a valuable resource for any researcher or individual interested in women's studies, feminism and in researching in the social sciences.

Extending Social Research: Application, Implementation and Publication (Paperback, Ed): Gayle Letherby, Paul Bywaters Extending Social Research: Application, Implementation and Publication (Paperback, Ed)
Gayle Letherby, Paul Bywaters
R1,309 Discovery Miles 13 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What are the responsibilities of those involved in social research for maximising the impact of research findings?. How can social science researchers ensure that their work is widely publicized, applied and implemented?. When should social research be extended or ended?. . Aimed at social researchers, students and research commissioners, this book is about the application, implementation and publication of social research. It focuses on the tasks of making findings available and ensuring that applied social research makes a difference to peoples lives.

. . Drawing upon numerous examples, the book demonstrates the importance of considering the impact of research throughout the whole process. The contributors argue convincingly that an ethical approach to social science research requires a focus on the effectiveness of outcomes, outputs and responsibilities not acknowledged within the traditional research process.

. . This book also critically evaluates research production as well as the expectations placed on researchers by funders, the academic system and end users, arguing that from inception to completion, researchers need to pay attention to how their work could and should be used.

. . "Extending Social Research" rigorously examines the assertion that effective evidence-based social research can influence policy and practice and provides key reading for all those with an interest in the outcomes of research work, including funders, policy makers and researchers. .
